Tait-Wengert Goes Wire-to-Wire to Defend Women’s Championship Title

Colorado Springs, Colo. - With partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 80’s, Cheyenne Mountain created a stunning backdrop for the 2024 Colorado PGA Women’s Championship presented by Colorado Golf & Turf. The Championship, open to female PGA and LPGA Members and Associates, was hosted at The Country Club of Colorado on August 12th and 13th.

Through the first 18 of the 36-hole tournament, Ashley Tait-Wengert, PGA Instructor at Turkey Creek Golf sat atop the leaderboard, posting a 2-over 73, followed closely by Alyson Bean, PGA Associate at The Club at Ravenna, at 3-over-par and Kelli McKandless, PGA Instructor at Murphy Creek Golf Course, at 4-over-par.

Following the day one round, players and caddies enjoyed a happy hour hosted at The Country Club of Colorado restaurant, Gates Grill. The mountain scenery, food and drinks created for a fun evening of mingling with fellow golf professionals!

Day two saw Ashley Tait-Wengert pick up where she left off on day one with birdies on Holes 2 and 4, the two Par 5s on the front nine. “I wanted to take advantage of the Par 5s when you have a wedge in your hand, I did that birdieing all the Par 5s today,” Tait-Wengert said. Finishing the front nine with a 2-under-par 34 gave her a 2-shot-lead with 9 holes to play. Tait-Wengert played those final nine holes in even-par to secure a 2-under-par final round of 69 and a four-shot victory over McKandless in second place and 6-shots clear of Bean in third place. When asked what it means to defend her title Tait-Wengert stated, “I have been playing well going into it, and definitely had the expectations to shoot par or better and put pressure on everyone else.”

Centennial, Colo. - It was a beautiful day to crown a champion at Valley Country Club for the 67th Colorado PGA Professional Championship. Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at Lakewood Country Club began the day with a two-shot lead over Tristin Goodwin, PGA Assistant Professional at Cherry Hills Country Club. Goodwin started the day red hot as he birdied four of his first six holes and added an eagle on hole 5 as he holed his wedge shot from 40 yards out. After hole 6 Goodwin had flipped a two-shot deficit into a three-shot lead. “My strategy did not change, but my mindset definitely changed a little bit, I started to feel more pressure as I was leading the golf tournament now,” Goodwin said. Bogies on holes 7 and 9, the two par threes on the front nine, and a birdie from Keffer on 7, Goodwin and Keffer made the turn to the back nine dead even at 9-under-par.
