Three-Time Champion Fitzgerald in the Lead After First Round of Colorado Assistant PGA Professional Championship
Other Past Champions Sitting Just a Few Stroke Behind
Saddle Rock Golf Course played host to a number of Colorado Opens in the early 2000’s, long before many of the competitors in the 2018 National Car Rental Colorado Assistant Professional Championship were even playing golf. The Dick Phelps designed course hasn’t hosted many professional events since then and unfamiliarity with the course was on display during the first round Monday.
Caine Fitzgerald, who lives nearby in Parker, Colo., and works at Meadow Hills Golf Course, another City of Aurora Golf Course, has played the course enough times to use it to his advantage.
“Having played the course as many times as I have certainly helped today,” noted Fitzgerald after his round. “I was able to trust my game knowing the course so well and I was able to play into positions where I could attack.”
Fitzgerald made six birdies during his opening round and just two bogeys on his way to posting a four-under-par 68.
Sitting in second place is Tyler Winslow, Assistant Professional at Lake Valley Golf Course. Winslow posted four birdies during his opening round including a closing birdie at the difficult par-4 18th.
Two players sit tied for third place after posting one-under-par 71. Four-time champion Geoff Keffer, an Assistant Professional at the Greater Golfer Development Center, is joined by Ben Lanting, Assistant Professional at Bear Creek Golf Club, three strokes behind Fitzgerald.
2016 Champion Pat Grady, the Assistant Coach for the University of Colorado’s Men’s Golf Team, sits tied for fifth place with three other players.
The final round will begin at 7:30am on Tuesday morning. The final group will tee off at 10:20am.
The top four finishers from the event qualify for The 42nd National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, which will be played November 15 – 18, 2018, on the Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
